Our library is dedicated to providing and promoting access for all to an extensive range of resources, which will:

  • meet the educational needs of all members of our staff and student body;

  • enhance and enrich our educational philosophy and curriculum;

  • stimulate interest and independence in literacy; and

  • encourage our staff and students to create and manipulate ideas and information efficiently and effectively so that they may become independent lifelong learners.

If you need help logging in to or searching the library catalogue using Infiniti, have a look at this guide.

Opening hours

Our library is open from 8:45am until 3:00pm, and is staffed by a fully qualified Teacher-Librarian, as well as a Library Teaching Assistant.

The library is accessible by classes throughout the day for borrowing and library lessons, and is open for students to access at lunch breaks.

Borrowing guidelines

Students in Prep and Year 1 can borrow 3 books at a time, and can keep these books for 1 week.  Students in Year 2 to Year 6 can borrow up to 5 books at a time, and can keep their books for 2 weeks.

Book Club

Scholastic book club catalogues are handed out twice per term.  Parents, students and staff can order from book club by logging in to Scholastic.com.au/loop.  Our school receives 20% of all book club sales in the form of Scholastic rewards points, which are used to purchase new books and resources for the library.  Students, parents and staff are able to have a say in how these rewards points are spent, by requesting books through our 'library wish' system.  Check the latest newsletter for information on the closing dates for book club orders.

Resources

Our library provides access to a diverse range of resources for students and staff.

New resources are added continually, with purchases being informed by curriculum needs and student interests. Students, parents and teachers are able to submit suggestions for book purchases via our 'wish list' system.

New resources are promoted to students via library displays, including slideshows and bookshelf displays.  New resources are shared with staff through a regular library newsletter, which includes summaries of new books and resources to support the use of these books in the classroom, including discussion questions and activities.

Extra-Curricular activities and reading promotion

Our library provides a number of extra-curricular activities aimed at promoting student reading engagement and engagement within the library space.

Makerspace

Our makerspace is a creative free space for students to make, design, build and create.  Displays and challenges change frequently to provide inspiration, but students are encouraged to use their imaginations and create freely.

Book Week

The Children's Book Council of Australia's Book Week is a major event for our school and library each year.  Students are encouraged to come to school dressed as a favourite book character for our Book Week Character parade, and participate in themed activities in the library in the lead-up to book week each year.  Our library is proud to provide access to the books shortlisted for the CBCA book of the year awards as part of our book week celebrations.

Premier's Reading Challenge

The Premier's Reading Challenge is an annual state-wide initiative for Queensland state and non-state schools and home-educated students from Prep to Year 9, as well as children (aged up to 5 years) enrolled in an early childhood centre.

The Premier's Reading Challenge aims to improve literacy and encourage children to read for pleasure and learning.

At Chapel Hill State School we are pleased to support and promote this reading initiative.

Lunchtime Activities

The library is a very popular space for students to visit at lunch time.  Students enjoy using the makerspace, drawing and colouring, playing chess, and of course reading and borrowing books.  From time to time we have special events as well, such as competitions and trivia games.
